An elevator roping system refers to the arrangement of steel ropes (or belts) and pulleys that connect the elevator car with the counterweight and motor. It determines how the elevator moves, how much load it can carry, and how much space the system requires.

The rope passes once over the traction sheave (motor pulley).

Requires more motor torque.

Larger machine room needed.

🔹 4. 2:1 Roping

The rope passes over a pulley on the car top, then anchored to the building structure.

One meter of rope movement = 0.5 meter of car movement.

Reduces required motor power (smaller motor size).

Increases load capacity.

Saves energy.

⚠️ Limitations

Reduces elevator speed (half of rope speed).

More pulleys = more maintenance.

🔹 4:1 Roping (Special Cases)

Rope passes multiple times through pulleys.

Very high mechanical advantage → used for heavy loads with small motors.

👉 Best For: Large freight elevators, stage lifts, special industrial applications.

🔹 Rope-Less / Belt Systems (Modern)

Uses flat belts or linear motors instead of steel ropes.

✅ Advantages

Can move vertically and horizontally.

Lighter and more durable than ropes.

⚠️ Limitations

Very costly.

Still rare in most countries.
